The Gospel Music Association has been giving out Dove Awards for 46 years. Last night in Nashville, it charted new territory by naming a rapper as its “Artist of The Year.”
36-year-old Houston native Lecrae
Moore, who goes only by his first name, was not at Lipscomb’s Allen Arena to accept the award. He’s on tour in Japan. But nabbing the Dove Awards’ highest honor is just the latest in a series of firsts for the Christian hip-hop performer.
Last year, Lecrae
topped both the Gospel Album charts and the Billboard Top 200 with his album “Anomaly” — the first time that’s ever happened.
Christian pop singer
Lauren
Daigle
was the night’s other big winner. She came away with three awards including “Song of the Year” and “New Artist of the Year.”
Below is the video for the song “Welcome to America,” from Lecrae’s
2014 “Anomaly” album.
