TVA inspectors have measured the thickness of insulation, checked for leaks around doors and windows, and investigated ventilation systems for about 17,000 homes.
It’s part of the power producer’s “Energy Right Solutions” program that offers energy efficiency audits and rebates, grading homes on a 10-point scale.
And one has finally met their standards for a perfect 10.
Erik Daugherty moved into his grandparent’s 1930’s ranch style home two years ago.
“And we basically looked at it and decided we needed to start over,” he said.
He replaced windows, rerouted electricity, and even installed a geothermal system. Everything he bought was EnergyStar certified or comparable. He did not put in solar panels, but he did add insulation. Lots of insulation.
Daugherty says the updates will pay off in the long run, not just financially, but because it teaches his kids to be energy conscious.
“They have, in their bathroom, a motion sensor on the faucet so that when they’re taking time to brush their teeth — you step away and it turns off,” Daugherty said. “And they can check the thermostat and see how much energy we’re using because there’s a real time display.”
TVA officials say that what Daugherty has done is remarkable. On average, those who ask for an inspection after their home repairs achieve a five or six.
