Of the one-and-a-half million endangered gray bats living in the U-S, more than a third of them live in one Tennessee cave. Hubbard’s Cave, just south of McMinnville, is their winter-home. Twenty years ago, volunteers built what was then the world’s largest cave gate to protect the bats. While their population has grown from the 10’s of thousands to more than half-a-million, flooding, corrosion and outright human destruction have led to the need for a more advanced gate to keep them safe. WPLN’s Blake Farmer watched the new gate’s construction and has this report. – more info at The Nature Conservancy.
