Nashville Mayor Karl Dean wants to set aside more than $7 million for a new bus-rapid transit line called “The Amp.” But city officials say they won’t actually use the money until the proposed project clears the first hurdle to getting federal funding.
As a first step, officials have asked the Federal Transit Administration to approve The Amp for Project Development. If that happens, Dean wants to have $7.5 million ready to flesh out detailed engineering specs. Meanwhile, Metro just released a new video (below) showcasing the planned east-west route.
“The Amp will travel in dedicated lanes, and will use signal prioritization to speed up the trip and travel faster than a car stuck in traffic. Eastward from the Elmington Park station, the Amp will be running in the center of the street, with stations located in the median.”
Dean is eventually hoping for some $75 million in federal funding to cover roughly 40 percent of the project’s cost. Officials say they’re hoping to submit an application this fall.
