RAW AUDIO: Napolitano Says Border Security Shouldn’t Be Moving Goalpost For Immigration Overhaul

While both of Tennessee’s U.S. senators voted to get on with the debate over immigration reform, they say the bill has to secure American borders.  To that, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano argues borders have gotten a lot tighter in recent years.

Napolitano, the former Arizona governor, points back to the failed effort in 2007 to overhaul immigration rules in the senate.

“They wrote into that bill a number of border security measures which they agreed at the time would more than satisfy our border-security needs.  And we have met or exceeded each of those measures.  So if border security is simply being used as a means to keep moving the goalpost to address the entire system, that’s a problem.”

Napolitano unexpectedly offered WPLN a brief interview, while saying she had not been closely watching Tennessee’s senators.  Her comments come as Tennessee’s Chamber of Commerce and Farm Bureau tout a poll saying most of the state’s likely voters support a comprehensive immigration bill.
