The first “Queen of Country” was laid to rest Friday and remembered as a faithful woman who just happened to sing in bars.
Kitty Wells’ funeral was held at Hendersonville Church of Christ, part of the conservative denomination in which she was raised.
The voice of the Grand Ole Opry – Eddie Stubbs – performed the eulogy. He recalled a conversation with Wells about how she balanced her upbringing with singing songs about infidelity.
“Regardless of the venue they might be playing – whether there was dancing or alcohol or whatever else might be happening – they always did the gospel songs.”
Kitty Wells died at age 92 on Monday.
