The National Rifle Association responded to the State of the Union address at a conference of turkey hunters gathered in Nashville this afternoon. The organization’s chief said the speech exposed a “charade.”
The NRA’s Wayne LaPierre points out that President Obama never used the words “school safety.” He says that’s proof Obama is only using recent school shootings to further a “decades-old gun control agenda.”
“We will not be duped by the hypocrisy in the White House or the Congress, who would deny our right to semi-automatic technology and the magazines we need to defend ourselves and our families.”
LaPierre says such measures have nothing to do with making children safer. He renewed the NRA’s call for an armed guard in every school.
The 600 National Wild Turkey Federation members at Opryland Hotel were a friendly crowd. LaPierre took no questions from reporters who were not allowed inside.
