The publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Convention is recalling a pink Bible that benefits cancer awareness, labeling the project “a mistake.” Some of the money raised was filtering to Planned Parenthood.
A statement from Lifeway Christian Resources based in Nashville says even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood – which performs abortions – “is not in keeping” with the denomination’s “core values.”
As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Lifeway released a pink Bible and agreed to donate a dollar from each sale to the Susan G. Komen foundation. But soon, complaints began surfacing that local Komen affiliates were sending some of the money to Planned Parenthood.
The Komen foundation says in a statement proceeds from Bible sales were only going toward breast cancer screenings and expressed disappointment in Lifeway’s decision.
