Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia will pay more than 3 and a half million dollars to the federal government to settle claims that it didn’t properly bill Medicare for ambulance services
According to a press release from the US Attorney’s office, Maury Regional billed Medicare for ambulance trips that weren’t deemed medical necessary, misstated mileage on billing statements, and didn’t obtain proper signatures for some ambulance services.
The Justice Department says the violations took place over a four-year period, starting in 2004.
Nashville US Attorney Jerry Martin commended the hospital for notifying regulators about the ambulance billing issues. He says after the inaccuracies were discovered, Maury Regional developed a plan to quickly correct the problems.
