Mayor Megan Barry is eager to play mediator in order to help Google Fiber fully launch its service in Nashville. She has requested telecoms and utilities meet in her office as soon as possible.
Google Fiber has had a tough time working with Comcast and AT&T. While NES owns most of the polls in town, every provider is responsible for moving their own lines to make room. According to the
Wall Street Journal, Google has faced similar roadblocks in other markets and is considering whether to pull the plug on the landline project altogether in some places.
Mayor Barry says she’d still like Google Fiber in Nashville, and there’s really only one thing she can do to help.
“We can all get in a room, and we can hash through this,” she said, calling the impasse “urgent.”
The Metro Council was scheduled to vote this week on a hotly contested ordinance that would make it a bit easier for Google to use its competitors’ polls. Without it, Google says fiber might not happen in Nashville. After a nearly three-hour debate, the vote was
pushed off until at least September.
