McGavock High School Library Swaps Shelf Space For Hands-On Learning

One of outgoing Mayor Karl Dean’s pet projects has been rethinking what a school library should be, and the latest overhaul has happened at Nashville’s McGavock High School. This week, the library debuted a cyber café, a “maker space” for science and art projects and a sound and video production studio.

This is the fifth library significantly overhauled by the Limitless Libraries program, which is linking schools to the larger city system. This way students have access to virtually any book in town. 
At the same time, the physical libraries at schools are being changed one at a time.

The
first of these renovations was funded privately by the family of businessman John Ingram. Since then, Dean has put a million dollars into his annual capital spending budget to fund renovations at a couple of schools each year.
