A Democratic candidate for governor hopes to add more jobs in Tennessee by recruiting suppliers for large businesses that are already building here. Jackson Businessman Mike McWherter says as governor job creation would be his top priority.
McWherter says the state’s location and road network make distribution easy. So it shouldn’t have to provide lots of tax incentives to bring in suppliers for Tennessee’s growing industries.
“Hemlock’s not operating yet. Wacher’s not here yet. Volkswagen’s not in production yet. As those things come on and they get into production, they will need supplies, and that’s what I’m talking about: We’ve got to aggressively go ahead and go after that.”
McWherter also noted the megasite in Haywood County. That’s a tract in west Tennessee where the state hopes to lure a large manufacturer.
The site will also be home to a state solar farm, and McWherter says he’d like to expand Tennessee’s clean energy portfolio there. But he says he’ll go after “the first big industry I can find.”
