Nashville’s first woman mayor, Megan Barry, announced today that she’s running for Congress. She’s vying for Tennessee’s District 7, which is currently held by Republican Congressman Mark Green.
In a video released on social media Barry says residents have been struggling for too long under Green.
“We’ve become immune to innocent people being gunned down in our schools and our communities and Congressman Mark Green has done nothing. We’re losing our rural hospitals at an alarming rate and people are dying because of it,” Barry said. “And women in Tennessee are dealing with one of the most extreme abortion bans in the country and Mark Green supports it.”
Running for the District 7 seat will be a very different kind of race for Barry, who ran for mayor in heavily Democratic Davidson County. The congressional district stretches from the Kentucky border starting in Montgomery County in the north and down to Wayne County on the Alabama border. Parts of West Nashville are included in that.
Congressman Mark Green won his last congressional race in 2022 by 40,000 votes.
