The call has gone out for artists interested in creating a Civil Rights themed piece of public art for downtown Nashville. The competition will be a national one.
The work will be part of beautification efforts for a section of Fifth Avenue now known for its numerous art galleries. The area was once home to multiple lunch counters where black college students staged sit-in protests a half-century ago.
The Metro Arts Commission process of selecting an artist will likely take until early next year. The winner will be given a 75-thousand dollar budget. That money comes from a public art funding program which has set aside one percent of every construction bond issued by Metro government since the year 2000.
