The Metro department overseeing the city’s massive fleet of vehicles outlined new idling policies today, which go into effect August 1st. At Mayor Karl Dean’s request, the department of General Services has restricted idling in Metro vehicles to one-minute or less, with exceptions for emergency vehicles and buses.
New policies are also now in place for use of city vehicles. In the face of a shrinking city budget, the mayor asked for a 10-percent reduction in the 4-thousand-unit fleet. Manager Bill Malcolm says already 362 units are being decommissioned.
“Essentially we process them. We get them ready for decommissioning and sale, but we are disposing of this equipment.”
Malcolm says the vehicles, which range from golf carts to dump trucks, will be sold off as soon as possible. The new, stricter guidelines for use of city vehicles go into effect September 1st.
