Parents of students in Metro Schools may find a letter sent home this week about the district’s new student assignment plan confusing.
The mailing notifies hundreds of families that their children are zoned for a new school. There is a grandfather clause in some of the letters. As described, the system would not provide transportation if parents choose this option.
Councilman Jerry Maynard says this is a disingenuous attempt to meet a commitment made when the rezoning plan passed a contentious school board vote in July. The school board said students could continue at their current schools and the district would get them there.
“Well, the communication that went out from the school board is not clear. It’s anything but clear. It’s clear as mud. So parents are going to send their children to their zoned schools.”
The rezoning plan moves the district toward neighborhood schools in place of cross-town busing. School officials say it will more heavily concentrate low-income students in North Nashville.
The deadline for parents to make a decision is February 27th.
