Metro school officials are promising tighter security at high school basketball and football games. The action is in response to a drive-by shooting at a basketball game in November that wounded two teenagers. A subsequent game was rescheduled because of fears of retaliation, but some Metro council members said rumors shouldn’t disrupt school events.
Ralph Thompson, the assistant superintendent of Metro student services, appeared before Council members last night, saying he’s not willing to risk student safety.
“There’s one thing we know for sure. On that night that we postponed that game, we really have no idea what would have happened. But one thing we know for sure, we know what did not happen, and I can sleep pretty easily with that.”
Thompson said the shooting has improved how Metro Police and school security officers work together.
