For the first time, Metro High School students got to don a cap and gown and graduate in the winter. The ceremony took place this week.
About 80 students, along with their families and friends, packed McGavock High School’s auditorium for the commencement.
These students completed all graduation requirements before the end of the school year. The district has seen interest in graduating mid-year continue to grow.
Director of Schools Dr. Jesse Register hopes with the added ceremony, that students will see there are many paths to a diploma, and ultimately help improve Nashville’s 73 percent graduation rate.
“We’re trying to do everything we can to make sure that the organization does not put up road blocks to students being able to finish. We want to open doors for students.”
In the past, some students who could’ve graduated early opted to stay in school an extra semester so they could participate in summer graduation.
