Ten students from Metro Schools have been chosen to travel to the White House next week. Being selected was an emotional experience for some of the high schoolers.
The students will join others from around the country to attend an educational program on blues music and spend time with the First Lady.
The Nashville delegation comes from all over – Pearl Cohn, McGavock, Overton and Nashville School of the Arts. NSA principal Bob Wilson notified his three students last week. One cried.
“He actually teared up and he apologized, and I said ‘don’t apologize. You’re going to meet Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States of America.’ So I said, ‘tears are appropriate I think.’”
The blues lesson is part of a regular concert series in the White House that spans every administration since President Carter.
The trip for Nashville students is paid for by corporate sponsors. Mayor Karl Dean is scheduled to attend a send off on Sunday.
Nashville blues guitarist Keb Mo will also be performing at the White House event next week.
