A Metro middle school has been nationally recognized as a “Blue Ribbon School” by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. A Blue Ribbon means students at a school either achieved the top ten-percent on state tests or, as in the case of Rose Park Magnet, a school with at least 40% disadvantaged students demonstrates dramatic improvement on standardized tests.
Rose Park Middle School is one of 314 public and private schools from around the country honored with a Blue Ribbon this year. It’s the only public middle school in the state to get the national designation, though five other Tennessee schools are on this year’s list.
Principal Rise’ Pope says Rose Park’s six-year-old status as a math and science magnet was a big part of the turnaround in test scores. The school also recently became an automatic feeder to Martin Luther King High School.
Blue Ribbon Schools will be honored in Washington November 3rd at an awards ceremony.
