A new report shows that many of Tennessee’s healthiest counties are in the midstate.
The national study was conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin. Just over half of the counties ranked in the state’s top 25 are in Middle Tennessee. Williamson County at the very top. It’s also the wealthiest county.
The study breaks down a range of factors, from how many people are uninsured or die at a young age, to how easy it is to find healthy groceries and the rates of smoking and drinking. Dr. Veronica Gunn is the state Department of Health’s chief medical officer. She says the results pinpoint both strengths and weaknesses in every community.
“These are things which are modifiable, things which a county can say we look at our patterns of physical activity in this county and see that our county may have low rates of physical activity. What can we do as a county to address that?”
The state’s overall health was ranked next to last in another study released this week. That one was conducted by Nashville-based Healthways and Gallup.
