Metro Police concluded Wednesday that former Titan quarterback Steve McNair was shot by his 20-year-old girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, early Saturday morning.
The police department was awaiting ballistics testing, which turned out to support a murder/suicide. Police chief Ronal Serpas announced the investigation’s findings.
“McNair was seated on the sofa and likely was asleep. And we believe that Kazemi shot him in the right temple, then shot him twice in the chest, then shot him a final time in the left temple.”
Kazemi then shot herself and fell in McNair’s lab. The crime lab confirms gun residue on her hands. She purchased the nine-millimeter pistol from a friend just two days prior.
Detectives were searching for a motive. Serpas says Kazemi had told co-workers over the last week of her life she “should just end it.” The young waitress had discovered her roommate was leaving, effectively doubling her monthly rent. She had just been arrested on DUI charges, and she suspected McNair, who was married to another woman, had yet another girlfriend.
Police have dismissed Kazemi’s ex-boyfriend as a suspect. And they say they are no longer concerned about the 40 minutes that elapsed between when McNair’s friend found the bodies and 911 was called.
