Close to 700 Tennessee National Guard soldiers return home this week.
Units from the Knoxville-based 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment have been coming back from Iraq since June, six months earlier than expected. This week’s return will include soldiers from 10 Tennessee cities, including Springfield and Clarksville. All units will arrive at the guard’s Volunteer Training Site in Smyrna.
More than 3,400 soldiers in the 278th were deployed to Iraq last February. They were originally scheduled to return this December. The early departure is part of a troop reduction. With this week’s arrival, half the soldiers will have returned. All troops are expected to be back by the end of August.
