Thursday marks one-year since a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election. The January 6 insurrection included at least 19 Tennesseans. Most of those are still awaiting sentencing.
Out of the 19 charged, fewer than five have actually been sentenced. Jack Griffith of Nashville is one of them. He pled guilty to a misdemeanor for parading in the Capitol building. He was sentenced to three years of probation with 90 days of house arrest.
His attorney, Heather Shaner, is based in D.C. and represented several others charged in the Capitol riots.
“I’ll tell you Jack Griffith hasn’t changed one bit. He didn’t read a single book. He’s a lovely boy; I really like him,” Shaner said. “I don’t think that he’s learned anything politically from doing this except that you should not publish stuff on Facebook.”
She says Griffith’s sentence is the same deal that most of her clients got who did not incite violence or destroy property.
Shaner says, while some of her clients still believe the false premise that the 2020 election was stolen, many regret participating in the insurrection.
“I have other clients who have reviewed history, read Thomas Paine, and looked at the United States Constitution and read some historical fiction, and it has opened their eyes and opened their hearts,” Shaner said. “And they would never come back to the Capitol and do that again. But they would vote for Trump in 2024.”
Shaner says many of her clients come from rural parts of the country and get their news primarily from right-leaning sources.
“They did not share what I would consider to be mainstream, factual beliefs about the election,” Shaner said. “And before Jan. 6, they did believe that they were doing something patriotic because they were led to believe the election was stolen.”
She says of the more than 700 charged, only about six have pled guilty to felony charges. One Tennessean who faces federal charges is Joshua Portlock, located in Smyrna. He was seen wearing a beanie with an emblem associated with the Proud Boys on it. The group is known for embracing white nationalism and has been named a terrorist group in Canada.
