Maury County’s Mount Pleasant is trying to tamp down what town officials say are rumors about the water supply. Citizen activists claim the water piped into their homes may be contaminated.
Mount Pleasant gets its water from a spring. And when it rains, city manager Michelle Williams says the water can get a little cloudy. But she contends the rumor mill has been working overtime. She says state water quality testing has found nothing wrong.
“We’ve done everything on our end to show people that’s it’s not our system, but we do have a stock of older homes in Mount Pleasant and so maybe there are some people that maybe have an older home with galvanized pipe that maybe have some issues.”
The town has sent flyers to all 4,500 homes served by the utility. Williams is even offering to dispatch workers who would test the water in homes of concerned citizens.
The activist group Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment has been raising concerns for months after a city employee was found to have altered water treatment logbooks. That employee was fired in February.
