This week Nashville played host to a Republican fundraiser for likely presidential contender Fred Thompson. Next week, it’s Democratic candidate John Edwards.
Elizabeth Edwards will be in town Tuesday for a 15-dollar-a-person ‘Small Change for Big Change’ fundraiser on West End.
John Edwards was in Nashville this spring to rollout his rural recovery plan. Even as a Senator from North Carolina, Edwards was hardly seen in the south during his campaign to be John Kerry’s vice president.
Speaking today from a campaign bus in New Hampshire, Mrs. Edwards says she and her husband are making an intentional push to be in states like North Carolina, Virginia, Kansas and Tennessee—states that have traditionally voted for Republican presidents.
“Every one of the state’s I mentioned has as Democratic governor, so Democrats can win in these states if but only if they’re talking to the people of that state about issues that are important to them, if the people of the state believe that they are a legitimate messenger for that vision and they talk about specific solutions.”
John Edwards grew up working in a saw mill, but had a successful career as a powerful trial attorney before entering politics. He’s positioned himself as the working man’s candidate, though he’s come under fire in recent months for living a lavish life-style. Mrs. Edwards says it just goes to show the American Dream is still attainable.
