Ridership on the Music City Star commuter train has shot up in the month of January.
Average daily ridership is approaching 850. The Regional Transportation Authority has added an extra car to one of the trains to handle the load.
The total is still far from the initial goals set for the train of 1,500 daily riders but a significant improvement over the fall and this time last year.
RTA chief executive Paul Ballard says he’s confident the upward trend will continue.
The Music City Star, which runs between Lebanon and Nashville, hit an all-time high in 2008 of a thousand passengers a day. That’s when gas prices were hovering at $4 a gallon.
