Nashville’s legislative delegation warned members of the city council yesterday they won’t be able to carry any new laws this session that come with a price tag.
Metro council members asked state lawmakers to enact several meaures. But early in the discussion, Representative Sherry Jones told council members that legislation that costs anything is going nowhere.
The state is facing a deficit of almost $1 billion.
Among other things, the council asked lawmakers to distribute state education dollars more equally to help Nashville, and to clarify the so-called guns-in-parks law. And they wanted mandatory sentences with no parole for felony convictions, which lawmakers argued was impractical because it would tack on substantial expense.
Council members also urged state legislators to guard against any unfunded mandates on the city.
