Days before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, a Tennessee Republican lawmaker has filed legislation that would rename Nashville International Airport after the 45th and 47th president of the United States.
The proposal from Rep. Todd Warner, R-Chapel Hill, comes two years after statehouse Republican clashed with Democratic-leaning Nashville over control of its Airport Authority Board. After months of legal battles, Nashville regained autonomy over the airport.
The bill also echoes another 2023 proposal that would’ve renamed John Lewis Way “President Donald Trump Boulevard.” At the time, Metro Councilmember Zulfat Suara had criticized the decision to take the name away from the Civil Rights hero during Black History Month.
The renaming would’ve also removed protections for the street under the Tennessee Heritage Protection Act, which prevents the removal, relocation or renaming of a memorial.
