Nashville’s Metro Council is the latest group to ask Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee to veto a controversial adoption law passed by the General Assembly.
The council suspended its rules Tuesday night so that it could quickly pass a resolution that takes issue with a proposed law to allow adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex parents.
Councilmember Nancy VanReece, the chairwoman of the council’s LGBT caucus, says the state is sending the wrong message.
“Nashville is a welcoming place, and same-sex parents can and should reach out to the many adoption agencies that are happy to help same-sex families adopt and start a loving family,” she said.
The councilmember also worries about businesses and major events boycotting Tennessee. Some companies and conventions have warned that they might.
The council’s resolution passed easily without debate.
