Nashville Electric Service is selling more ‘green’ power than ever under TVA’s Green Power Switch program.
In June, NES signed up 434 new customers which more than doubled the same month last year. The utility is on pace to sign up more than 2-thousand participants this year.
As companies and individuals increasingly look to offset their carbon footprint, NES spokesperson Laurie Parker says buying TVA’s green power has the most local impact.
“People are actually able to benefit the environment right here in Middle Tennessee, as opposed to giving to something that covers the entire country or worldwide. This is something that will go back into TVA’s power mix that’s used right here.”
TVA’s green power comes from a wind farm in Oak Ridge, a methane gas plant near Memphis and solar panels scattered across the state. Parker says there’s plenty of clean energy to go around, but still less than one-percent of the 350-thousand NES customers are enrolled.
According to the TVA, buying eight-dollars of green power each month for a year is equivalent to recycling more than 15-thousand aluminum cans.
