WPLN’s Jason Moon Wilkins speaks with Jeremy Larson, aka Violents, before a rare, live performance in Nashville Thursday night.
A relatively new Nashville transplant, Larson has been recording under the name Violents for a while, but his new album with former Phox singer Monica Martin has earned him the most interest.
The album got its biggest boost when country star and taste-maker Kacey Musgraves posted about her favorite song “Spark” — an action Larson says changed the band’s algorithm.
Larson discusses why he chooses to exclusively work with female singers for the Violents recordings, even though he has an expressive voice with incredible range (which you can hear from an unreleased clip featured in the audio version of this story). He also acknowledges the timing of an album, written exclusively by a man but sung by a woman, in the emergent debate over “mansplaining.”
