The Metro Nashville school district is moving up its deadline for charter school applications, in hopes of giving approved charters more time to get ready for that first day of school.
Anyone wanting to open a charter school in Nashville will have to get their application in by April 1. This will give approved charters close to a year and a half to get ready for the first day of school. The old deadline, October 1, meant schools had less than a year before opening their doors. Alan Coverstone, who oversees charter schools in the district, says the new deadline should help avoid mistakes made in the past.
“We really need that extra time on the front end between approval and actually opening the school so that everybody is ready to go. We think that will cause a lot fewer disruptions like what was experienced at Nashville Global and the like.”
Nashville Global Academy, a charter school that opened in 2009, struggled with transportation and enrollment problems in the fall.
