As a part of the national Night Out Against Crime, neighborhood block-parties around Nashville last night showed a drastic contrast in the challenges faced by various sections of the city.
While neighbors in West Nashville’s Sylvan Park discuss the latest shed vandalism or stolen lawn mower, people North of town are battling violent crime.
As North Nashville Councilman Jamie Isabel greets several of his constituents at a grill-out on Clarksville Highway, he says Metro Police officers are not thought of as heroes in his district. Isabel adds that the area also seems to be a lower priority for police.
“It’s an issue right now. Every day someone is shot in North Nashville. Sounds to me like people should be shot all over the city. Why are the shooters only in North Nashville? Maybe there’s a fear that if you shoot somewhere else, you’ll be caught.”
Isabel says there are other factors, but adds that his community needs a greater sense of police protection.
More than 10-thousand people were expected at get-togethers throughout the city for the Night Out Against Crime. The initiative is meant to build community and promote relationships with law enforcement and emergency responders.
