Nissan’s corporate headquarters is cutting its call center based in Cool Springs and outsourcing the operation to a third-party.
The company confirmed (today/yesterday) that 255 jobs will be lost, though most are temporary employees. 73 are full-time Nissan workers and 17 of those made the move from California when the automaker relocated its headquarters here last year.
Spokeswoman Julie Lawless says those laid off will be able to apply for new jobs within Nissan. She says the customer service will be cheaper to manage outside the company, though she wouldn’t disclose a dollar figure of the savings.
“The automotive industry is so competitive, and so we’re always looking for ways to increase our efficiencies and provide our customers with the best possible service and choices. I think we’re always looking for ways to focus on efficiencies and really enhance our core operations.”
Minacs [MY-nacks] Worldwide of Toronto will take over customer service operations sometime this summer. It operates call centers in Canada and the Philippines.
In an effort to trim its workforce, Nissan also made buyout offers to anyone at its Smyrna manufacturing plant last month. It’s not yet known how many will take the offers.
