Solar-assisted car charging stations are going up at Nissan’s headquarters and assembly plant near Nashville. The Japanese automaker says they demonstrate a dedication to a “zero-emissions society.”
Nissan’s 30 solar car chargers will be in place by July. They’re designed specifically for the Leaf, which is the company’s mass-market electric vehicle, soon to be produced in Smyrna.
On a visit to the plant that will make the Leaf’s batteries, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says the federal government is committed to electric vehicle infrastructure.
“I think you’ll see the government making investments in charging stations around the country, particularly as these vehicles and other battery powered and hybrid vehicles are being sold.”
Long-term plans call for nearly 15,000 chargers – not all with solar functions – in the states where Nissan has already launched the Leaf, primarily on the West Coast.
A total of 125 solar-assisted charging stations are planned for Tennessee.
