Nissan North America is offering buyouts to anyone at its Tennessee plants in Smyrna and Decherd.
Company spokesperson Vicki Smith says truck and SUV sales have slowed while production on the plant floor has picked up.
“Over the last year we’ve made significant productivity gains on our shop floor. At the same time, Nissan has a very low employee attrition rate at about 2.5%.”
Smith says 450 workers are at retirement age and that the buyout is a way to let those who are ready to leave go ahead. The Smyrna plant employs 52-hundred hourly workers.
The offer is open to any employee, regardless of seniority. It’s a 45-thousand dollar lump sum with 500-dollars extra per year with the company. Smith says Nissan expects 300 to take the offer which is available through March 13th.
