Nissan North America says the last Frontier has rolled off the line at its plant in Smyrna. The Franklin-based automaker is moving production of the light truck and the X-Terra to Canton, Mississippi to make room for new models.
It wasn’t called a Frontier in 1983 and didn’t even have a name. Since that first truck was built in Smyrna, more than a million have been assembled there.
Susan Brennan is Nissan’s vice president of manufacturing overseeing the Smyrna facility.
“The Frontier put this plant on the map, and all the new products we’re bringing in – the JX, the new Pathfinder, the LEAF, the Maxima and the Rogue – are going to keep Smyrna on the map.”
Nissan officials say the plant will be busier than ever. They’re adding a third shift for the first time. Sales have been climbing, but not all of the incoming models are proven. The all-electric LEAF has fallen well below initial projections.
