Hundreds of protesters came out on Saturday to demonstrate against the Trump administration’s immigration policies — despite 90-degree temperatures.
They marched from Fannie Mae Dees Park in Nashville to an intersection across from Belmont University, in part to call attention to one of the school’s board members: CoreCivic CEO Damon Hininger. Among the company’s for-profit prisons is an immigration detention facility in Texas.
Protesters also called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, and an end to the practice of charging asylum seekers with immigration violations when they cross the border — especially when it means separating children from their families.
“We’re going to nip that stuff in the bud right here,” said Richard Hatcher. “We’ve got a little boy that’s 20 months old right now, and when you see these images of children being torn away from their mothers and their mother’s breast, that’s more wrong (than) any kind of evil you can name. I can’t think of something worse than that.”
