Nearly 10,000 seats make up Greer Stadium, and like any ballpark in America, they are covered in peanut residue. But for the past few days, nearly every member of the Sounds’ staff has taken to the stands to individually hand wash them for Monday night’s “Peanut Free” promotion.
Spaces like these are both valuable and underrated, according to Dr. Travis Cain of the Allergy, Asthma and Sinus Center in Knoxville.
“These parents are always on the lookout for potential exposures. … Unfortunately, a lot of people are too cavalier against precautions,” Cain said. “This is the one time where they can say, ‘People have done the best that they can … to try to make sure that it’s the safest place possible.’ ”
After scrubbing down the park, Sounds General Manager Brad Tammen said, no peanuts will be sold. Even products like Dippin’ Dots will be removed because of their trace amounts of nut residue.
“If there’s a little bit of extra cost, it’s worth it, completely worth it, to bring out fans that would normally not come out here because of their peanut allergies,” Tammen said.
This season marks the Sounds’ second peanut-free night.
