Property Tax Ammendment

Volunteers turned in a petition today that could give Nashville voters a say in property tax increases.

The Davidson County Election Commission is currently reviewing the over 15 thousand names on the petition. If enough of the names are verified, then the amendment will appear on this November’s ballot.

Organizer Ben Cunningham says the number of signatures is an indication that people will vote for the amendment. He says he feels many of the people who signed the petition are unhappy with the system, pointing to a raise in property taxes last year.

“Many of the council members we talked to said that their phone calls were running heavily against the property tax increase but many of them went ahead and voted for it anyway—and that’s, you know I think people were frustrated about it. I don’t think they were represented.”

Voters currently must approve increases in the local portion of the sales tax in Tennessee.
