The state department of education has turned in its application for the federal government’s Race to the Top program. The 11-hundred page document details how Tennessee’s schools would spend just over $500 million, if the state were to win the grant.
Half would go directly to local school districts’ existing Title I programs for at-risk children. $109 million would be used for interventions in nearly 200 struggling schools, including 13 which the state would take over entirely. Other money is earmarked for helping teachers use the state’s existing student data system, beefing up math and science instruction, and revamping professional development offerings for teachers.
It’s not yet clear how many states will be chosen for the first round of Race to the Top funding. Federal officials are expected to announce the winners in April.
You can read the entire application on the state’s website.
