Nashville’s new regulations for short-term home rental apps like Airbnb make it difficult to comply if someone doesn’t own the property. Rules approved by the Metro Council earlier this year require that land owners turn in the permit application.
“It was just sort of a quirk in the law that was overlooked in the first pass,” Councilman Charlie Tygard says. He has introduced a city ordinance to fix the new law.
Tygard says the property owner requirement has been a problem for a handful of applicants. His bill giving renters authority to get a permit is up for a first vote tonight.
Airbnb warns its hosts to check their lease agreement before taking in guests through the app, since the practice is sometimes forbidden.
Enforcement of Nashville’s new short-term rental permits begins July 1. Last summer, Nashville led the nation in growth of Airbnb bookings.
