A Rutherford County family filed suit yesterday to try and get the Bible Park back.
At issue is the petition that stopped the development from moving forward.
The Shelton family owns the 240-acre parcel in the Blackman community that developers wanted to buy for the Bible Park.
County Commissioners voted 12-9 in favor of rezoning the Shelton’s property. Normally, that simple majority would’ve moved the project forward. But the vote was held to a higher standard – a 2/3 majority, which it didn’t meet – because enough nearby property owners signed petitions opposing rezoning the property.
The Shelton family claims in its suit that county commissioners allowed unqualified signatures, and that the simple majority rule should be enforced. That would mean Bible Park developers could return to Rutherford County and move forward with its plans for a $175 million religion-based theme park. Developers are now in talks with Wilson County officials to build the park in Lebanon.
