Today, the Tennessee Board of Regents decided what it’s looking for in a new executive.
The TBR manages a network of more than 40 state universities, community colleges, and tech centers. A quorum of the board unanimously approved a set of criteria for retiring Chancellor Charles Manning’s replacement. The two-page document is mostly a wish list, but there is one firm requirement: applicants must have earned a doctorate degree.
Regent Millard Oakley was late to the meeting and missed the vote. But he did express his reservations.
“I’ve dealt with some PhDs over the years that couldn’t run a popcorn stand. And so, I just don’t–a personal view is I don’t think that should be required. I mean, it may be suggested, but I don’t think that ought to be the ultimate decision.”
Oakley also suggested that finalists ought to submit a statement of their personal finances and undergo psychiatric evaluation.
Five search firms are competing to run the chancellor search. The Board of Regents intends to make its choice of companies this month and hopes to select a new chancellor by March or April.
