Sen. Bob Corker just came out in support of the GOP tax bill. Initially he was worried about its impact on the federal deficit. But fellow Tennessee Republican, Sen. Lamar Alexander, who peddled the plan Friday morning at the Rotary Club of Brentwood, says he thinks the plan will help the nation’s debt.
“I care about the deficit, too.” Alexander said. “I’ve just decided that the need for economic growth slightly outweighs the concern about the deficit. In fact, I think we will reduce the deficit if we pass this tax bill.”
Alexander says he’s banking on the fact that a cut in taxes will jumpstart economic growth, bring in more revenue and reduce the federal debt..
After weeks of skepticism and being the sole Republican to vote against the Senate’s tax bill, Corker released a statement Friday:
“This bill is far from perfect, and left to my own accord, we would have reached bipartisan consensus on legislation that avoided any chance of adding to the deficit….But after great thought and consideration, I believe that this once-in-a-generation opportunity to make U.S. businesses domestically more productive and internationally more competitive is one we should not miss.”
Confirming a ‘yes’ vote from Corker is key for Republicans, who have a slim majority in the Senate and can only afford to lose two votes.
