One of Tennessee’s Republican senators has something nice to say about presidential candidate Donald Trump, who gave a foreign policy speech Wednesday in Washington.
Bob Corker, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released a brief written statement complimenting Trump’s vision for American engagement in the world. Corker said he wants to see more details, but called the “very good” speech “an important step” in moving beyond “angry rhetoric” that has defined this year’s presidential race.
This isn’t the first time the senator has shown warmth toward Trump. Early in March, as Mitt Romney and John McCain criticized the Republican frontrunner on the national stage, Corker released a statement scolding the Republican Party for stifling the voice of the American people.
While Tennessee’s other statewide officials endorsed Florida Senator Marco Rubio before his departure from the race, Corker
has not made an endorsement during the primary process. His further support would be welcome for Trump, who
lags behind his competitors in endorsements from sitting Senators.
