Tennessee Senator Bob Corker says he’ll continue to negotiate with Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd on changes to the way financial institutions are regulated.
For two weeks, Corker had been the lone Republican at the table with Dodd. This week Dodd, a Democrat, announced he’d run out of time and would introduce his own version of the bill rather than continuing to hash out a compromise.
Corker says the two had come very close to an agreement. He expects some of that work will be reflected in Dodd’s bill, and he holds out hope that whatever compromises are cut out can be added back in as the measure moves through the legislative process.
“I think we’re going to get there. I’m disappointed with where we are today. I think we will get there, but I think it’s going to be far messier.”
Corker denies reports that he’d tried to exempt payday loan stores from regulations meant to protect consumers. He says he wants to see lenders at every level held to the same standards.
