The state Senate Thursday night passed a proposed law to change the eligibility date for a child to enter kindergarten.
Under the bill, which now goes to the governor for his signature, a child would have to turn 5 years old by August 31st in order to start kindergarten that fall. Currently children born in September can qualify. Now September birthdays will be in the next year’s class.
However, the law change also lets children as young as four enter kindergarten if they score well on a standardized maturity test.
