A slight majority of teachers and parents of students surveyed by Metro Nashville Public Schools say they’d like to switch to a balanced academic calendar. That would extend the school year and build in longer breaks in fall and spring, while trimming a few weeks from summer vacation.
Superintendent Jesse Register has led the push for an expanded school year, like in this video presentation from last month:
“Time is a variable that we need to use better. I feel that we cheat children out of time in Tennessee.”
The telephone survey late last week reached more than 17 thousand families – 53 percent favored the new calendar, while 47 percent wanted to stay with a more traditional model.
Among teachers, just under 60 percent favored the new plan.
